NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN

FROM APRIL 1 - APRIL 28, 2014

 1. Fanfiction only - no other medium considered for these awards.

 2. You can only nominate 1 STORY per CATEGORY per SHIP. A story CAN be nominated in multiple Categories (in other words, the same story can be nominated for Best Romance, Best Smut, and Best Comedy, for instance, if you want), but you only get to fill the slot for that Category with ONE nomination. If you need examples, please see this post (scroll down).

 3. Anonymous fics accepted - If a fic is part of a fest that is currently on-going and the fest posts these fics with no author names revealed because it is an anonymous fest, you can definitely nominate those stories. Please put 'anonymous' where the author's name would be. Once the fest reveals the author names, we'll update the list for you with the corrected information.

 4. The only stories that can be submitted for Nomination for the Spring/Summer 2014 Round had to have been COMPLETED between April 29, 2013-April 28, 2014 (they could have been started at any time, but the final chapter [not an author's note, but the actual last chapter of the story] must have been originally submitted to the public between these dates)

The only Groups/relationships (ships) that are accepted for this Round's nominations are:

 • Gen Fic (non-romantic/non-sexual stories - no NC-17/MA stories allowed for this Group)

 • Dramione (Draco Malfoy x Hermione Granger)

 • Drarry (Draco Malfoy x Harry Potter)

 • Harmony (Harry Potter x Hermione Granger)

 • Hogwarts Staff & Spirits (anyone x Bathsheba Babbling, the Bloody Baron, Cuthburt Binns, Charity Burbage, Edgar Clogg, Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington, Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore, Lord Draben, Albus Dumbledore, the Fat Friar, Argus Filch, Firenze, Filius Flitwick, Godric Gryffindor, Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank, Rubeus Hagrid, Rolanda Hooch, Helga Hufflepuff, Silvanus Kettleburn, Gilderoy Lockhart, Minerva McGonagall, Moaning Myrtle, Peeves, Irma Pince, Poppy Pomfrey, Quirinus Quirrell, Helena Ravenclaw/The Grey Lady, Rowena Ravenclaw, Aurora Sinistra, Horace Slughorn, Salazar Slytherin, Severus Snape [exception: no Snarry or Snermione for this Group as they have their own Groups], Pomona Sprout, Sybil Trelawney, Septima Vector, the Wailing Widow)

 • Marauders (James Potter x Sirius Black, James Potter x Remus Lupin, James Potter x Peter Pettigrew, James Potter x Lily Evans, Sirius Black x Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black x Lily Evans, Remus Lupin x Peter Pettigrew, Remus Lupin x Lily Evans, Peter Pettigrew x Lily Evans [exception: no Sirius Black x Remus Lupin for this Group as they have their own Group in the Fall/Winter Round])

 • Next Gen x Next Gen (Teddy Lupin, Scorpius Malfoy, Albus Severus Potter, James Potter, Lily Luna Potter, Lorcan Scamander, Lysander Scamander, Dominique Weasley, Fred Weasley, Hugo Weasley, Louis Weasley, Lucy Weasley, Molly Weasley II, Rose Weasley, Roxanne Weasley, Victoire Weasley x each other only)

 • Snarry (Severus Snape x Harry Potter)

The Categories to Nominate stories under are:

 • Best Drabble (a ficlet of 500 words or less)

 • Best Adventure (for Gen Fic only)

 • Best Drama-Angst Fic (any length story)

 • Best Dark Fic (any length story - see the definition for what qualifies as 'dark' material here [scroll down to find])

 • Best Comedy (any length story)

 • Best Alternative Universe (any length story)

 • Best Romance (any length story)

 • Best Smut (any length story - depending on the Ship, that could mean Het, Slash, or Femmeslash - no Threesomes+ allowed for this Round as they have their own Group in the Fall/Winter Round)

Put a number in the comments and I’ll answer accordingly. The mission for those of us who answer the questions, should we accept it, is to stay positive about our writing and ourselves, but to also be fair about our shortcomings.

1. Of the fic you’ve written, of which are you most proud?
2. Favorite tense
3. Favorite POV
4. What are some themes you love writing about?
5. What inspires you to write?
6. Thoughts on critique
7. Create a character on the spot... NOW!
8. Is there a character you love writing for the most? The least? Why?
9. A passage from a WIP
10. What are your strengths in writing?
11. What are your weaknesses in writing?
12. Anything else that you want to know... (otherwise known as Fill in the Blank)

This meme circulated the f-list a few years ago, but as most of us have had a renaissance in our fic-writing since then, I think it's time to re-visit this and re-live our greatest hits!

"Sometimes it's okay to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five favorite fics that you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This is isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same. Everyone else in the world should do it..."

[Fics ahoy!]Honourable mention: Brother Mine (I thought this was one of my better minor character exploration/missing canon moments.), Collateral Damage (I just had a lot of fun writing this, really.), Hell's Bells (This fic is one long Dramione spork-slash-dick joke.), Laid to Rest (I love this because it is the completion of an era. I finished my Hollow Soldiers series with this, and it will probably be my last QSQ winner.), The Healer's Heart (I love Michael and Daphne so much, and knowing how my HS continuum pans out, I was happy to give Michael a nice ending.), Counting the Ways (I never really related to Dean as a character until I wrote this. Now he's one of mah babiessss.).

5. Wild Card: There are a million reasons why this fic shouldn't work, with it being cross-gen (Oliver/Roxanne), but there was just something so incendiary about these two when this fic came to me. I love their dynamic together, and I love how easily I could write this story because they are two of my favourite characters.

4. Brazen: This fic is also one long, dirty joke, and it was so, so much fun to write. Even years after the fact, despite the fact that it didn't bring home the QSQ for Humour for which it was nominated, it still stands as an icon on MNFF for the genre. It's also the proud owner of its own Tumblr gifset, courtesy of Julia!

3. Hollow Soldiers: This story will never be off this list. I don't care that it never won a QSQ, despite the fact that I believe it's better than the one-shot that won that year (What Lies Behind). But more than that, this fic started the Michael Corner era for me. I got an idea for his life story and wrote part of it in Azure in the Snow, but this fic gave that story breadth and depth that it needed to really tell his tale. I'm still proud of it.

2. In the Ashes: Katie and Oliver are my babies, and I don't care what anyone else says. This fic started a revolution on MNFF for this pairing, which basically did not exist. Now it has a following and readership, and I'm proud to put a pairing on the map. The writing in most of it is just...not good, but this is one of those instances where I simply do not care.

1. Dust to Dust: I will cry forever over this fic because it was so hard to write. Not just in terms of quality, but what I was writing about was awful, terrible, and wrenching just to think about. And then I had to put it in words. While the premise of it isn't my life story, I do know someone who experienced a similar thing in their lifetime, and I can say without a doubt that I put every ounce of effort I could into making this fic genuine. It will never get a lot of reads and reviews because of what it is, and it never won a QSQ. But QSQs can blow me, because they aren't the gold standard for me anymore. This is my best piece of writing. It just is. Whatever problems with it exist are my problems as a writer, not its problems. I literally cannot do better than this.

That was actually nice to do.

Fall/Winter 2013 - Vote Here, Vote Now!

One of my fics is actually nominated here, but either way, it could be a good way to find fics you wouldn't have otherwise noticed.

Remember:

 • Voting closes on midnight PST (Pacific Standard Time) on the 31st of December. Get all your votes in before then.

 • Vote only for the Ships and Categories that interest you. You don't have to vote for everything, unless you want to.

 • You don't have to put forward all of your votes at once. Space out your votes, if you need to (one Category this week, three next week, four more tomorrow).

 • No take-backs or do-overs. Once you cast your votes, they're locked in. Comprehend and amend before you hit SEND.

 • Don't vote for yourself if your fic is nominated. Gag. Gross. Bad form. Don't do it.

 • Please read all of the stories in a Category before you vote. We can't force you to do this, obvi, but we'd really like this awards ceremony to not be a popularity contest, and more a contest about skill, hard work, and dedication to the fandom. Help us make it as objective and fair a ceremony for the fans and the authors as possible.

 • No cheaters allowed! Don't try to fool us by voting under different email addresses/LJ accounts. That's unfair and wrong, and we're keeping track of every vote in a spreadsheet - including who voted for what. If we catch you cheating, you're banned from the awards for life. Don't make us become Blue Meanies.

Seriously, if anyone could scan the syllabus and send it to me, I would be very appreciative.

One of my foibles as a TV watcher is that I rarely, if ever, give new TV series a chance. People like me are probably why perfectly watchable shows end up getting cancelled, but hey. I like to consume my entertainment after a deep selection process, and then in large quantities (aka several seasons in or upon completion). You lot talking about shows you like have a large impact on the things I try, and it's been far more of a good experience than a bad one this way.

That being said, I still want to put a plastic bag over my head when Glee is on, but I can't stop. It's a disease. I hate everything. Whatever. >.<

Day 2 - A show you wish more people were watching: Daria

Although it's off the air for well over a decade, there is something about this quiet yet snarky teenager that reminds me of what it's actually like to be that age. Born into a dysfunctional middle class family, Daria Morgandorffer is an intelligent outcast with one friend, an overbearing mother, a father with no discernible attention span, and a sister who pretends she doesn't exist in public. This cast of characters is probably the most real of any TV show I've ever watched, yet I don't know if any of you have ever had the pleasure of watching it.

VM is one of the most intelligent series I've ever had the chance to watch. With snappy dialogue, intense and well considered plots, and love-to-hate-them characters, there is just no way to describe the compelling nature of it other than GO WATCH IT. Its noir atmosphere is the perfect blend of intrigue and suspense, and I wish it was still on the air now.

Happy birthdayyyyyyy!

Ariana, I truly wish you a happy birthday, because if anyone deserves amazing things, it is most certainly you!

As I seem to be short of shiny words and really, anything that isn't horrible angst, I decided in order to celebrate one of my genuine favourite people on MNFF (or anywhere, really), that I would take some of the beautiful gift you gave me last Christmas and give it back in some small measurement. Hereby, I gift you with a drawing. As a disclaimer, I am not a great artist, nor a particularly good one, but I thought you might appreciate the opening to your fic Love Is Like a Wrong Turn on a Cold Night in art form. Salut! <3

We remember...

[...don"t we?]

Well, today is that day again: the time for golden speeches and glittering sentiments and obligatory flag-waving. I’ve never been much of a flag-waver, and my words are brass as best when next to more precious and sought-after metals. Sentiments are not my thing, either.

But what about today? What do I say about today? This is usually the one time of year that I have things to say that might be seen as profound, or at least eloquent to some extent. In the wash of the shining memorials across the TV airwaves, though, I find myself empty of words. Words won’t happen. Am I forgetting? I don’t think so, as it’s the first time in two weeks that I’ve been sure of what the date is. Am I forgetting what it means? I hope not; the day we forget the things that got us to where we are is the day we lose our way on where we’re going, and I would heartily prefer not to contribute to that. What is it that is stealing the words that used to come so easily?

I think, now that the tenth anniversary of 9/11 has come and gone, that complacency is beginning to work its way into our brains. It’s so easy to think of something that happened over a decade ago as part of ‘history’ and not a part of the ‘present’. This makes me genuinely afraid, because if it’s happening for me, then it’s certainly not a stretch to think it’s happening for others, as well. Nothing is scarier than the things we don’t think about, because it’s what we don’t prepare for. Dream science has shown us that what we see while we’re asleep is preparation for things we might face in the real world, changing in relevance as we grow older. What I fear is that we stop thinking about the events that day, and that our minds become so far removed from it that we stop preparing for it.

So what do we do? How do we keep this in our hearts and in our minds, and not forget that there is a genuine chance that the next Osama bin-Laden or Al Qaeda or some other damned thing can come along and knock a nation on its knees again? Honestly, I don’t know how we can forget, but I seem to have done it myself. This is where the words are failing me. I want to say the right thing and leave you today, as I go off to work, with the feeling that the next year can bring anything but that you are ready for it, since things really can’t sneak up on you if you’re looking right at it. But I don’t know what to say. And maybe that is all I can say. Is it enough? Probably not, but was it ever enough?

Here’s hoping this is something to think about.

So, as it is mid/late August and I work at ye local ginormous supermarket, we are selling shit-tons of school supplies. I try to make idle chit chat with the parents shelling out an excess of a hundred dollars per child to send them off to the wide learning yonder. Sometimes, we talk about the nifty things that they make now that never existed when we were kids (dry erase boards, rulers with built-in three-hole punches, every colour Sharpie known to man), and sometimes we talk about random stationery-related junk. I like stationery; it is my foible.

However, today, someone told me something that freaking broke my brain. Our local school district, which has been up shit creek without paddles for years now, has made a budgeting error to the negative to the tune of $2.8 MILLION. I mean...whoa. A few hundred grand here and there, yeah. That's an oversight. But this is an EPIC FUCKING SCREW UP, FOR WHICH SOMEONE SHOULD BE FIRED. Our school district does NOT have an accountant or a relationship with an accounting firm, so laypeople are basically controlling the financial matters concerning thousands of kids. That is mickey mouse shit. And people wonder why we're 48th out of 50 states in education. Because we have unqualified people steering the ship, not enough teachers who actually have a DEGREE in the subjects they teach, let alone a degree in teaching, and now this hot mess.

As a result of this, there will be no substitute teachers for this school year, no paid sick days or vacation days for any school district staff, and a myriad of penny-pinching cuts across the board will be made at every turn, including the school nutition programs.

I can't even with this. This is nuts. And the state school board wants to roll out the Laptop for Every Student program in two years' time. How about 'teachers in the classroom' initiative, where random school staffers or PTAers babysitting classes in which no one is learning doesn't become an acceptable solution to a problem?

I feel like I should do something. Sure, I pay taxes, but I can't help but think that there should be more I can do. I am thinking about going down to the high school office tomorrow morning and asking if there is anything I can do to help. Even if I don't normally give a shit about anything, especially teenagers, this isn't right. It just isn't right.
This is Freaking Long. Be warned. Also, somewhere between recording and uploading, there are bits that are warped and weird-sounding. Now I remember why I haven't done this in forever...it keeps eating mah words!

Feel free to skip if you don"t care. I would.Collapse )
